The Saudi Arabian Riyal (SAR) is the official currency of Saudi Arabia. It has been in circulation since 1925 and is issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA). The riyal is subdivided into 100 halalas. Historically, the Saudi Riyal was pegged to the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), but since 1986, it has been fixed to the US Dollar at a rate of 1 USD = 3.75 SAR. The riyal is widely used for transactions within Saudi Arabia, particularly in industries like oil, tourism (including pilgrimages to Mecca and Medina), and international trade. The currency features Arabic inscriptions and images of Saudi monarchs, with newer polymer banknotes introduced in recent years for durability and security.
